Description

Barley scald, caused by the fungus Rhynchosporium secalis, is a major foliar disease affecting small-grain cereals globally. This pathogen primarily impacts barley and rye, causing significant damage during cool and humid growing seasons, which often leads to substantial yield losses in susceptible varieties.

The fungus survives between seasons on infected crop debris, volunteer plants, and contaminated seeds. As temperatures rise and humidity increases, spores (conidia) are produced and spread by rain splashes and wind currents. This primary inoculum initiates the infection on the lower canopy, gradually moving upwards as the crop progresses through development stages.

Symptoms are identified by characteristic lesions on leaves and leaf sheaths. Initially, these appear as water-soaked, grey-green patches. As the lesions expand, they develop a distinctive light-grey or white center with a dark, often purplish-brown border. If the infection remains untreated, the leaves wither rapidly, reducing the photosynthetic area.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically cool weather (15–20°C) and persistent moisture. High humidity levels are essential for spore germination and colonization of host tissues. When weather conditions are favorable, the disease can spread rapidly, severely affecting the flag leaf, which is crucial for grain filling.

Management of the disease requires an integrated strategy to minimize the impact of the pathogen. Key practices include:

  • Choosing resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation to reduce inoculum in the field.
  • Managing crop stubble through deep plowing or burning where allowed.
  • Applying fungicides during the critical stages of flag leaf development to prevent yield decline.
