Systematic position and characteristics: The pathogen responsible for barley scald, Rhynchosporium secalis, belongs to the Ascomycota division. It is a highly specialized fungal pathogen that primarily affects barley, rye, and various wild grass species. The fungus propagates through asexual conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum for spreading the disease throughout the growing season.
Disease and host crops: The disease manifests as characteristic lesions on leaf blades and sheaths, often starting as water-soaked spots that develop into grey-white necrotic patches with dark-brown margins. Severe infections lead to premature leaf senescence and death, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic area of the plant, resulting in stunted growth, lower grain filling, and substantial yield losses.
Biology and life cycle: The pathogen survives the off-season as mycelium within infected crop debris, on seed surfaces, or as latent infections on winter-sown cereals. As temperatures rise in the spring and moisture is available, conidia are produced and disseminated by rain splashes and wind currents. The life cycle can repeat multiple times during the season, allowing the disease to progress rapidly under favorable conditions.
Conditions for development and spread: Barley scald thrives in cool and humid weather, with optimal infection occurring at temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. High humidity and prolonged leaf wetness are critical requirements for the successful germination of conidia and infection of host tissue. Dense crop canopies and high nitrogen fertilization rates often exacerbate disease severity by creating a favorable microclimate for the fungus.
Management and control measures: Effective management of barley scald requires an integrated approach to reduce primary inoculum and suppress disease progression:
- Selecting and planting resistant or tolerant barley cultivars.
- Implementing appropriate crop rotations to break the disease cycle.
- Practicing thorough residue management, such as deep plowing or burial of straw.
- Applying fungicides during the growing season when environmental conditions are conducive to infection or upon the appearance of early symptoms.
