Description
Narcissus smoulder, caused by the fungus Sclerotinia narcissicola (often referred to as Botryotinia narcissicola), is a destructive disease affecting bulbous plants. This fungal pathogen leads to leaf blight and bulb decay, significantly impacting the aesthetic and commercial value of Narcissus species.
The disease primarily targets daffodils and related bulbous plants within the Amaryllidaceae family. The fungus survives as sclerotia—small, black, resting structures—in the soil or on infected plant debris, allowing the pathogen to persist in the field for several growing seasons until conditions for germination are favorable.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic, yellowing tips on the leaves that progress downwards, eventually covering the entire foliage. In advanced stages, the bulbs exhibit soft, greyish rot, often accompanied by the presence of dark, crusty sclerotia on the scales, which distinguishes this condition from other types of basal rots.
Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity and cool to moderate temperatures are ideal for the development and spread of Sclerotinia narcissicola. The pathogen often enters through physical wounds on the bulb or during the emergence of sprouts through infested soil, taking advantage of vulnerable tissues in early spring.
Effective management strategies center on sanitation and integrated pest management. Key steps include removing and destroying infected plants, implementing a strict crop rotation cycle to prevent soil-borne inoculum buildup, and treating bulbs with appropriate fungicides before planting to protect them during the critical stages of establishment.
