Coffee leaf blight, caused by the fungus Sclerotium coffeicola, is a significant agricultural disease affecting coffee production. The pathogen belongs to a group of fungi known for producing sclerotia, which are dormant, survival-resistant structures that allow the fungus to persist in the environment for extended periods.
The primary host for this pathogen is the coffee plant (Coffea spp.). It affects various stages of the plant's life cycle, from nursery seedlings to mature, fruit-bearing trees, significantly impacting the structural integrity and health of the crop.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic brown lesions on leaves and the blighting of terminal shoots. In advanced stages, the fungus produces a dense, whitish mycelium that covers the infected parts, eventually hardening into dark sclerotia that serve as a source for further spread of the infection throughout the plantation.
The development and dispersal of Sclerotium coffeicola are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures. Poor air circulation caused by overcrowding of plants or lack of proper pruning creates a humid microclimate that favors rapid fungal growth.
