Description

Southern blight is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Sclerotium delphinii (syn. Athelia rolfsii). It is a soil-borne fungus known for its rapid progression and ability to devastate a wide range of herbaceous and woody plants. The disease typically attacks the crown and root system, leading to wilting and sudden plant death.

The host range of this pathogen is remarkably broad, affecting hundreds of plant species including ornamentals, vegetables, and weeds. Because it survives as sclerotia—dormant, resilient structures—in the soil, the pathogen can persist for several years, making the site unsuitable for susceptible crops if not properly managed.

Symptoms often begin with rapid wilting of leaves, followed by the appearance of a white, fan-like fungal mycelium at the base of the stem. As the disease advances, the infected stem tissues become necrotic and soft. The telltale sign of the pathogen is the presence of small, round, mustard-seed-like sclerotia, which eventually turn dark brown as they mature.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease development. Sclerotium delphinii thrives in warm temperatures (typically 25°C to 35°C) combined with high soil moisture. The fungus spreads easily through contaminated soil movement, water runoff, gardening tools, and the introduction of infected plant materials into new areas.

Effective management requires an integrated approach due to the pathogen's persistence. Once a plant is heavily infected, it is usually impossible to save, necessitating removal. Key strategies include:

  • Removing and destroying infected plants along with the surrounding soil to minimize inoculum buildup.
  • Improving soil drainage and avoiding dense plantings that limit air circulation.
  • Practicing strict sanitation of tools and equipment used in infested areas.
  • Using appropriate fungicide treatments for high-value crops under professional supervision.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation with non-host species to reduce soil pathogen populations.
