Description

Septoria tritici blotch, caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella graminicola (anamorph Zymoseptoria tritici), is one of the most economically significant foliar diseases affecting wheat crops globally. It specifically targets the photosynthetic tissues of the plant, severely impacting grain development.

The disease primarily attacks wheat, including both winter and spring varieties, as well as rye. Under favorable conditions, it can infect all aerial parts of the plant, but the most severe damage occurs on the leaves, starting from the lower canopy and progressing upwards toward the flag leaf.

Initial symptoms include chlorotic, irregular spots that eventually enlarge and turn necrotic, exhibiting a characteristic brown or reddish-brown color. As the infection matures, small black fruiting bodies called pycnidia appear within the lesions, which serve as the diagnostic hallmark of the pathogen.

The spread of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically prolonged periods of high humidity and rainfall. Rain splashes are the primary mechanism for dispersing spores from lower leaves to the upper foliage, particularly in dense crop stands with moderate temperatures between 15°C and 25°C.

The impact on yield can be devastating, resulting in significant reductions in both quality and quantity of wheat grain, often exceeding 30% if left untreated. Integrated management strategies are essential, involving the use of resistant cultivars, crop rotation, removal of crop debris, and the timely application of fungicides during critical growth stages such as flag leaf emergence.
