Description
The sheath nematode (genus Hemicycliophora) is a significant group of ectoparasitic plant nematodes. Unlike endoparasitic species, these organisms feed exclusively from the outside of the roots, using their long, specialized stylets to pierce the root epidermal cells and extract nutrients, which leads to plant stress and developmental decline.
These nematodes have a wide host range, posing a serious threat to various agricultural crops. They are particularly recognized as a problematic pest in cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) production, where they can severely inhibit root growth, leading to reduced vigor and significant yield losses in commercial bogs.
Symptoms of an infestation are often observed in the root zone before they become obvious above ground. Affected roots typically exhibit stunted growth, discoloration, and the formation of characteristic galls or necrotic lesions. The above-ground parts of the plant show signs of chlorosis, reduced internode length, wilting during periods of high temperature, and general patchiness within a field.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the lifecycle and spread of Hemicycliophora. They thrive in moist, sandy, or light-textured soils that allow for efficient movement towards plant roots. Spread between fields occurs primarily through the movement of infested soil by farm equipment, runoff water during heavy rains, and the distribution of infected nursery stock.
Management and prevention strategies focus on reducing nematode populations and preventing their introduction:
