Sonchus yellow net is a viral disease caused by the Sonchus yellow net virus (SYNV), which belongs to the genus Nucleorhabdovirus. This pathogen is a plant-infecting rhabdovirus that replicates within the nuclei of host cells, leading to severe physiological disruptions and systemic infection of the plant tissues.

The virus primarily affects plant species within the Asteraceae family. A notable host of economic importance is lettuce (Lactuca sativa), where the virus can cause significant yield losses. It often persists in wild host reservoirs like sow thistle (Sonchus species), which serve as the primary inoculum source for agricultural fields.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease include vein yellowing, which manifests as a distinct yellow network pattern across the foliage. As the infection progresses, affected leaves show chlorosis, crinkling, and stunted growth. Such symptoms significantly reduce the quality of leafy vegetables, making them aesthetically unappealing and reducing their market value.
