Description
Sonchus yellow net virus is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Nucleorhabdovirus within the family Rhabdoviridae. As an obligate intracellular parasite, this virus targets the vascular system of the host plant, severely disrupting systemic transport and metabolic pathways, which ultimately prevents the plant from reaching its full physiological potential.
The host range primarily includes members of the Asteraceae family, most notably the sow thistle (Sonchus species) and various lettuce cultivars. Characteristic symptoms of the infection include a distinct yellowing of the leaf veins, creating a reticulated "net" pattern, severe leaf chlorosis, plant stunting, and abnormal development of foliage, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic surface area.
The biological cycle of the virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, specifically aphids. The transmission process is persistent: the virus is acquired by the aphid during feeding, circulates within the insect, and eventually moves to the salivary glands. Once an aphid has acquired the virus, it remains infectious for the remainder of its life, effectively acting as a mobile reservoir of the pathogen.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on ecological factors that favor aphid population growth. Warmer temperatures and stable humidity provide ideal conditions for aphid multiplication and flight. As insects move from weed hosts like sow thistle to neighboring commercial crops, they facilitate the rapid spread of the virus throughout the field, often resulting in patchy infections.
The economic impact of the virus is significant, as infected plants often exhibit reduced yield and poor market quality. Since there are no chemical treatments available to cure systemic viral infections once established, disease management focuses exclusively on prevention and vector control strategies:
- Rigorous weed management programs to eliminate reservoirs of the virus in and around fields.
- Regular field scouting to detect aphid infestations early and apply timely insecticide treatments.
- Deployment of physical barriers or spatial separation from highly susceptible weed sources.
- Prioritizing the selection of resistant cultivars or certified clean seeds to reduce the risk of primary infection.
