Sphaerotheca is a genus of ascomycete fungi responsible for the plant disease known as powdery mildew. As an obligate parasite, this fungus lives on the surface of plant tissues, creating a characteristic white, flour-like mycelial mat. It uses specialized structures called haustoria to penetrate the plant cells and extract nutrients, which weakens the host plant significantly.
This pathogen has a broad host range, affecting various agricultural and horticultural crops. Major targets include berry bushes like gooseberries and currants, various cucurbits such as cucumbers, and ornamental plants like roses. The fungus can affect all parts of the plant above the ground, including stems, buds, leaves, and fruits, depending on the severity of the infestation.
The primary symptom is the appearance of white powdery patches, which eventually spread to cover large areas of the foliage. As the infection progresses, the patches turn gray, and small, dark, round structures called cleistothecia appear, which are the sexual fruiting bodies of the fungus. Affected leaves may curl, yellow, and wither, leading to severe physiological stress in the plant.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. Powdery mildew thrives in moderate temperatures and high humidity, though it does not require free water on the leaf surface for germination. Poor air circulation in greenhouses or overcrowded garden beds creates an ideal microclimate for the rapid spread of fungal spores via wind or physical contact.
The economic impact of Sphaerotheca is substantial, as it leads to reduced photosynthesis, stunted growth, and poor fruit quality or yield loss. If left untreated, the disease can cause total loss of susceptible crops. Effective management requires an integrated approach that combines cultural practices with the judicious use of fungicides to maintain plant health.
