The name is derived from the distinct spiral shape the nematode adopts when inactive or stressed.

This species has an exceptionally broad host range, posing a threat to various sectors of commercial agriculture. Key crops frequently infested by Helicotylenchus dihystera include corn, sweet potatoes, and cranberries, including the large-fruited cranberry.
