Robust spiral nematode

The Robust spiral nematode (Rotylenchus robustus) is a significant ectoparasitic plant pathogen belonging to the family Hoplolaimidae. It is widely distributed in various soil types and primarily targets the roots of agricultural crops, trees, and ornamental plants, causing reduced vigor and stunted growth.

The damage caused by this nematode is often underestimated as it does not always cause visible galls like root-knot nematodes. Instead, Rotylenchus robustus feeds on root cortex cells, leading to necrosis, reduction in root hair development, and impaired nutrient uptake. This stress often manifests as chlorosis and wilting during dry periods.

Regarding its biology, the species undergoes a standard nematode life cycle including eggs, four larval stages, and adults. Both juveniles and adults are motile and migrate through the soil profile to locate host roots. Their activity is highly dependent on soil moisture and temperature, with population peaks often occurring during periods of active root growth.

The economic impact of this nematode is particularly severe in woody perennials and field crops like potatoes or carrots. Infected plants exhibit a restricted root system, which significantly compromises their ability to survive environmental stress. Furthermore, the feeding wounds act as entry points for secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium or Rhizoctonia.
