Description
Scutellonema brachyurum is a significant plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida. As a sedentary semi-endoparasite, it affects the root systems of a wide range of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, making it a serious threat to agricultural productivity in various temperate and tropical regions.
The pathogen causes stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting in many crops, including soybeans, potatoes, corn, and tobacco. By feeding on cortical cells, the nematode causes root necrosis and prevents efficient water and nutrient uptake. Infected plants show a diminished root system, which significantly reduces the potential harvest quality and quantity.
The biological development of this nematode involves four juvenile stages and an adult stage. Being able to function both as an ectoparasite (feeding from the surface) and an endoparasite (partially penetrating the tissue), it adapts well to different environmental conditions. It primarily reproduces parthenogenetically, which facilitates rapid population growth when host plants are available.
Soil texture and moisture play crucial roles in the spread and survival of Scutellonema brachyurum. Sandy and sandy-loam soils provide ideal conditions for movement and reproduction. The pathogen can persist for long periods in the soil, even during unfavorable conditions, by remaining in a state of low activity or infesting various weed species present in the field.
