Description

Plant sporotrichosis is a fungal disease caused by various species of the Sporothrix genus. These fungi are classified as saprotrophic or opportunistic pathogens that can thrive in organic matter and soils. The disease is characterized by local tissue necrosis, often affecting woody perennials that provide a stable environment for fungal colonization.

The infection predominantly impacts ornamental plants, including roses and several woody species used in landscaping. The fungus typically enters the plant through micro-wounds caused by thorns, pruning tools, or environmental stress. Once inside, the hyphae spread through the vascular or cortical tissues, interfering with the plant's normal physiological functions.

Primary symptoms include the emergence of sunken, darkened lesions on stems and foliage. Over time, these lesions may develop a distinct fungal growth or exudate on the surface. In advanced stages, the infected plant parts may become brittle, discolored, and eventually die back, leading to a general decline in the plant's overall vigor.

The spread of sporotrichosis is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. These conditions favor spore germination and rapid mycelial growth. Transmission often occurs through contaminated garden tools, splashing rain, or wind currents carrying spores onto fresh wounds.

Effective protection and control require a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is paramount: pruning tools must be disinfected regularly, and infected plant material should be carefully pruned and destroyed. Furthermore, applying systemic fungicides during periods of high vulnerability can suppress initial infections and prevent the spread of the disease to adjacent healthy crops.
