Sporothrix blue stain

Sporothrix stenoceras is an ascomycete fungus widely recognized as a causal agent of blue stain in sapwood. Unlike wood-decaying fungi that degrade structural cellulose and lignin, this pathogen primarily occupies the wood parenchyma cells, significantly altering the aesthetic quality of the timber without immediately compromising its physical strength.

The host range of this fungus primarily includes coniferous species such as pine, spruce, and larch. The fungus is frequently vectored by bark beetles and other wood-boring insects. These pests introduce fungal spores directly into the tree's vascular system, establishing infection sites that can rapidly expand under favorable environmental conditions.

Symptoms of the infection are identified by the characteristic bluish-grey to black discoloration of the sapwood. This pigmentation is caused by the presence of melanin within the fungal hyphae. While the wood structure remains largely intact, the presence of these stains significantly lowers the market value of the timber, making it unsuitable for high-quality furniture or construction applications.

Development of the disease is strictly dependent on moisture and temperature. The fungus thrives in wood with moisture content above 20% and warm temperatures, typical of the logging season. Stagnant air and poor management of log stacks are critical factors that accelerate the spread of the infection throughout the stored lumber.

Managing the impact of Sporothrix stenoceras requires a combination of rapid harvesting logistics and chemical protection. Effective prevention strategies include:

• Debarking logs to facilitate faster drying of the sapwood.
