Description

The disease is caused by fungi of the Stachybotryaceae family, with Stachybotrys chartarum being the most recognized species. These are saprophytic mold fungi that, under specific environmental conditions, act as significant pathogens capable of producing dangerous mycotoxins.

These fungi primarily affect agricultural products, including stored hay, straw, and various grain crops. They thrive in damp environments where the moisture content of the substrate provides an ideal medium for the mycelium to establish itself and proliferate across the stored commodity.

Symptoms of the infection are characterized by the appearance of a dark, greenish-black or sooty powdery fungal growth on the surface of the plant material. Infected tissues often appear degraded and emit a distinctive musty odor, which serves as a warning sign of heavy mycotoxin accumulation within the biomass.

Development is driven by high humidity levels and poor ventilation in storage facilities. The spores of the fungi are highly resilient and disseminate rapidly through air currents, mechanical handling of infected materials, or contaminated farming equipment, spreading the infection to healthy batches.

The economic impact of Stachybotryaceae is severe due to the resulting toxicosis. If ingested by livestock, these toxins cause systemic illness, leading to tissue necrosis, immunological dysfunction, and, in many cases, significant mortality rates among animals fed with tainted materials.
