This fungus is known for its ability to cause severe foliar and head blight, leading to substantial yield losses in commercial wheat production. It belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and is a major threat in regions with high precipitation.
Winter wheat is the primary host crop susceptible to this pathogen, although it can also impact barley and various wild grasses. The disease cycle begins with the survival of the fungus on infected crop debris and seeds. Once conditions become favorable, the primary inoculum initiates infection, which then spreads rapidly through secondary cycles of conidial production.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, brown, water-soaked spots that develop into larger lesions with characteristic yellow halos. A definitive diagnostic feature is the presence of pycnidia, appearing as tiny black dots within the lesions on both leaves and glumes. When the head is infected, the disease causes shriveled grains and discolored spikes, which directly impacts yield and grain weight.
