Suberoteratosphaeria is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Capnodiales. These pathogens are primarily known for infecting the bark of woody plants, specifically those within the Eucalyptus genus. This fungal group poses a significant threat to forest plantations and nursery stock in regions characterized by warm and humid weather conditions.

The disease is caused by ascomycete fungi that lead a parasitic life within bark tissues. Infection typically occurs through micro-cracks or physical injuries on the trunks and branches of the trees. The disease type is classified as bark necrosis, which is often accompanied by the formation of specialized reproductive structures on the surface of the bark.

The primary symptoms of infection include the appearance of deep fissures, the dieback of outer bark layers, and the development of distinct cankers or ulcers. On affected areas, one can observe black, pin-head-sized fruiting bodies that eventually merge to form larger necrotic lesions, which inhibit the tree's internal nutrient and water transport systems.

The development and spread of the pathogen are driven by high atmospheric humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderately warm temperatures. Under these conditions, the fungal spores germinate actively and are dispersed by wind or water splash, leading to rapid infection across the plantation. Dense forest stands with poor air circulation are particularly susceptible to widespread outbreaks.

The economic impact of the disease involves the gradual dying of branches, reduced biomass accumulation, and ultimately the mortality of young seedlings or the weakening of mature timber trees. Recommended management and control strategies include:

  • Execution of sanitary logging to remove infected tree parts.
  • Ensuring optimal stand density to improve air circulation.
