Description
Sulfur deficiency is a physiological disorder that is frequently mistaken for a plant disease due to the visible chlorotic symptoms. Sulfur is an essential macronutrient required for protein synthesis and chlorophyll production. When plants lack sufficient sulfur, metabolic processes are disrupted, leading to stunted growth and reduced crop performance.
This deficiency commonly affects crops such as corn, oilseed rape, and cereals. Corn is particularly sensitive to sulfur availability, especially during its rapid growth phase. Unlike nitrogen deficiency, which typically starts in older leaves, sulfur deficiency is characterized by yellowing occurring primarily on younger, upper leaves because sulfur is relatively immobile within the plant tissues.
The visual signs include a uniform yellowing of the leaf blades, while the veins often remain light-colored or green. Plants affected by this disorder appear pale, stunted, and fragile. If the deficiency is not addressed promptly, it results in reduced plant biomass, delayed maturity, and a significant decrease in kernel formation and final crop yield.
The development of sulfur deficiency is often driven by low soil organic matter, heavy leaching of sulfates due to excessive rainfall, or cold and wet soil conditions that suppress microbial activity. When soil temperatures are low, the mineralization process of organic sulfur into plant-available sulfate form is restricted, making it unavailable to the roots despite its presence in the soil.
Effective management and protection strategies rely on regular monitoring and timely intervention. Key measures include:
- Performing soil and leaf tissue tests for accurate nutrient assessment.
- Application of sulfur-containing fertilizers, such as ammonium sulfate, during planting.
- Foliar feeding with soluble sulfur products when symptoms appear in early growth stages.
- Long-term soil improvement by increasing organic matter content to maintain stable nutrient cycling.
