Ulocladium leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by species of the genus Ulocladium, which are closely related to the well-known Alternaria group. These fungi are typically opportunistic, often appearing on plants that are already stressed or showing signs of senescence. However, they can act as primary pathogens under high humidity conditions, causing significant necrotic lesions on foliage and fruit.

This pathogen affects a wide range of hosts, including cucurbits, tomatoes, potatoes, and various ornamental plants. It is particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where high humidity and temperature control are difficult to maintain. The fungi survive in the soil, on plant debris, and occasionally on seeds, serving as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons.

Symptoms typically begin as small, circular to angular water-soaked spots that rapidly expand and turn brown or dark olive-black. As the lesions mature, they often develop a concentric ring pattern. In moist conditions, the center of the spot becomes covered with a dense, velvety dark fungal growth, which represents the sporulation phase of the fungus. This leads to the eventual collapse and death of the leaf tissue.

The development and spread of Ulocladium are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture. Periods of high humidity (exceeding 85%) and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C are optimal for spore germination and colonization. Wind, splashing water, and human activities are the primary means of dispersal within a field or greenhouse facility.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to premature defoliation, reducing the plant's ability to produce quality fruits or tubers. Furthermore, fruit infection directly affects marketability and post-harvest shelf life. Controlling the disease requires an integrated approach focusing on cultural practices such as ventilation and crop rotation, supplemented by the targeted use of fungicides.
