White smut of spinach

Entyloma ellisii

Description

White smut of spinach is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Entyloma ellisii, which belongs to the class of smut fungi. This disease primarily affects garden spinach, significantly reducing the marketability and quality of leafy green crops in both greenhouse and open-field production systems.

The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of characteristic spots on the leaf blades. Initially, these appear as small chlorotic areas that gradually lighten, turning white or yellowish-gray. As the disease progresses, the spots coalesce, causing leaf tissue necrosis and drying, which results in the total loss of the product's visual and culinary quality.

The development of the fungus is favored by high humidity, frequent rainfall, overhead irrigation, and moderately warm weather. The spores of the pathogen are easily dispersed by water splashes, wind, or farming equipment. The pathogen can survive in the soil on infected plant debris for long periods, waiting for favorable conditions to trigger new infections.

The damage caused by Entyloma ellisii includes not only direct tissue destruction but also a reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Infected spinach becomes unsuitable for sale or consumption. Under highly favorable conditions, severe infections can destroy 80–100% of the crop if timely protective measures are not implemented.

The control strategy relies on strict adherence to agronomic practices. Essential preventative measures include:

  • Using disease-free seeds and resistant spinach varieties.
  • Implementing a crop rotation scheme with a 2–3 year break before planting spinach again.
  • Deep plowing of crop residues into the soil after harvest.
  • Optimizing irrigation management to reduce moisture levels in the root zone.
  • Removing weeds that may serve as reservoirs for the fungus.
