Breeding legacy for compact landscapes

The 'Malyshka Bordyurnaya' (Border Baby) aster is a product of extensive breeding work by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing. Unlike tall cut-flower varieties, this annual cultivar was developed specifically for precise landscape design. With a compact height of only 20–30 cm, it serves as an essential tool for creating well-defined borders and dense floral arrangements.

Agronomic features and disease resistance

For professional growers and home gardeners, the primary appeal of this variety is its phytosanitary resilience. In conditions of high humidity or dense planting, the aster exhibits significant resistance to Septoria leaf spot. Furthermore, the breeding process specifically targeted the most common threats to the species:

• Mycosphaerella leaf spot;
• Fusarium wilt;
• Brown spot.

The growing period from sowing to flowering spans 80–90 days. During this time, the plant develops a robust bush with semi-spherical, soft pink flowers, 8–10 cm in diameter.

Practical application

Despite its small stature, the variety offers high ornamental value. Its ideal uses include creating expressive flower borders along walkways and container gardening. The aster thrives in pots, offering flexibility for rearranging terrace compositions or flowerbeds. As a non-wintering annual, it requires yearly replenishment of seeds, making it a perfect candidate for seasonal landscape updates.
