Description
Barley variety Astoria is a mid-season variety registered in the State Register of Selection Achievements of the Russian Federation since 2020. It was created by intraspecific hybridization followed by individual selection from a hybrid combination of varieties Astoria (France) and Ratnik (Russia). The variety is characterized by high yield, reaching 5.7 tons per hectare, as well as high drought and heat resistance, making it suitable for cultivation under various climatic conditions.
Astoria is intended for use in the brewing industry, food purposes, and as animal feed. The cultivation zone covers the Central Chernozem, Lower Volga, and North Caucasus regions of Russia, where the variety demonstrates stable yield and adaptability.
Special attention has been paid to the variety's resistance to aluminum ions under acidic soil conditions. Laboratory studies have revealed high resistance of barley Astoria to various concentrations of Al3+ ions, confirmed by positive root and seedling responses. These properties make the variety promising for selection and cultivation on acidic soils, expanding its application potential in the agricultural sector.
