Description

Barley leaf rust, or dwarf rust, is a common fungal disease of barley caused by the pathogen Puccinia hordei. It is one of the most widespread diseases affecting barley production globally. The fungus completes its life cycle by producing different types of spores, sometimes requiring an alternate host, typically species of Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum), to complete its sexual stage.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are winter and spring barley. The disease affects the foliage, including leaf blades and sheaths, reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plants. If the infection reaches the flag leaf, the impact on grain yield and quality is significantly more severe compared to infections occurring only on lower canopy leaves.

Symptoms appear as small, circular to oval, orange-brown uredinia scattered across the leaf surface. As the plant matures, these structures turn into black telia, which are often covered by the host epidermis. Heavy infections cause chlorosis and eventually necrosis of the leaf tissue, leading to premature senescence and a drastic reduction in biomass production.

The spread of Puccinia hordei is favored by moderate temperatures (15–22°C) and high relative humidity or free moisture on leaf surfaces. The wind-dispersed urediniospores can travel vast distances, allowing the disease to reach new fields rapidly. Once established, the pathogen can undergo several cycles of infection within a single growing season if environmental conditions remain favorable.

The economic impact of barley leaf rust is characterized by yield losses, which can exceed 30 percent in susceptible varieties. Beyond yield quantity, the disease also reduces kernel weight and grain uniformity, negatively affecting brewing quality. Effective disease management requires a combination of genetic resistance, good agronomic practices, and, when necessary, timely chemical intervention.

  • Eliminating volunteer barley plants and alternate hosts to reduce inoculum sources.
