Description
Bordeaux — the newest two-row fodder barley variety, registered in Poland in 2021. This variety is characterized by high and stable yield, confirmed by results across various European regions, including the UK, where yield reaches 9.5–10.4 t/ha. Bordeaux has excellent adaptability to diverse climatic and soil conditions, making it suitable for cultivation in different agroclimatic zones. Plants are low-growing, with good resistance to lodging both during the milky stage and before harvest, which contributes to maintaining grain quality and quantity. Bordeaux is characterized by early heading and maturation, which is especially important under limited water supply. The variety exhibits excellent tillering and high winter hardiness, ensuring reliability in medium- and intensive cultivation systems. The recommended seeding rate at optimal sowing time is 240–260 germinating seeds per square meter, with adjustments possible depending on sowing time and cultivation intensity. When sown early, the seeding rate should be reduced by 10%, and when sown late, it should be increased by 10%. The grain of Bordeaux variety is characterized by large size, high density, and uniformity, with a low level of screenings (about 1.2%), which is an important indicator for the fodder market. The grain specific weight is approximately 71.1 kg/hl, indicating high raw material quality. The stiff straw of the variety facilitates harvesting and reduces yield losses. All these characteristics make Bordeaux an attractive choice for farmers aiming to achieve high-quality fodder barley yields.
