The 'Oblako' variety, developed by the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the N.I. Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Genetic Resources, is an example of successful selective breeding aimed at adapting bird cherry (Padus avium) to extremely low temperatures. Its core strength lies in its high winter hardiness: the tree can withstand temperatures as low as -35°C without significant damage to its conductive tissues or buds, making it a strategically important choice for regions with severe continental climates.

Biological and Morphological Characteristics

The 'Oblako' variety is characterized by its high growth habit (exceeding 4 meters) and the formation of a wide, spreading crown. Its use in landscape design is justified by its ornamental properties; the abundant and lush flowering lives up to the name 'Cloud' (Oblako), creating the effect of a dense white canopy. From a technical standpoint, the tree features:

• Large fruit size: The fruits significantly exceed wild-type forms, simplifying the harvesting process.
• Fruit color: A deep black hue indicates a high concentration of anthocyanins and biologically active substances.
• Low maintenance: The variety exhibits high plasticity regarding soil and climatic conditions, which minimizes the need for intensive agrotechnical care.

Application and Practical Value

The dual purpose of this variety—ornamental and fresh consumption—allows it to be integrated into both home gardens and industrial landscaping. The fruits are suitable for fresh consumption, a rarity for many bird cherry cultivars, which often possess a pronounced astringency.
