PURPLE CANDLE

Purple Candle – a decorative chokecherry variety, distinguished by a narrowly pyramidal columnar crown up to five meters high and about one and a half meters wide. The tree bark is grayish-brown, and branches depart from the trunk at right angles, creating a compact form with branch tips directed upwards.

In the spring, the leaves of this variety are green and oval with a pointed tip. From mid-summer, they turn a deep purple color, giving the tree a bright decorative effect. The leaf edge is finely toothed, and the leaves fall quickly after autumn.

The fruits are black, shiny, and edible, with an average mass of 0.6–0.7 grams. They are round, smooth, with a short, thin pedicel that separates easily from the fruit. Blooming occurs in May with white inflorescences gathered in semi-hanging racemes; flowering intensity is moderate but fragrant.
