Description
The cherry variety Otрадa is a medium-late variety with a tall tree and moderate crown branching, which has a broad-pyramidal or medium-density shape. This variety is self-fertile and begins fruiting on the 4th–5th year after planting. The tree has high cold- and heat-resistance, drought tolerance, and increased resistance to coccomycosis, making it suitable for industrial cultivation and various climatic conditions.
The fruits of Otрадa cherry are large, weighing 9–14 grams, oval-round or flattened-heart-shaped with a deep red color. The flesh is pink-red, firm, juicy, and has a pleasant sweet taste with a slight acidity and aroma. The fruit detaches from the stem dryly, which contributes to high transportability and universal use of berries.
For successful cultivation, trees should be planted in sunny locations protected from cold winter winds and summer drafts, on loamy or sandy-loam soils. The variety does not tolerate waterlogging but requires deep watering to moisten the soil to a depth of 40 cm. During fruit ripening and in August, watering should be limited to avoid fruit cracking and to stop shoot growth. Due to the compact crown, the optimal planting scheme is 4 × 4 meters.
