Description
Blackcurrant "Elegant" is a red medium-early ripening variety with large, oval berries that have an irregular shape and an average weight of about 4.8 grams, reaching up to 6.5 grams. The berries are distinguished by the absence of a calyx and a greenish-red flesh with a pleasant sour-sweet taste, confirmed by a high sensory rating of 5 points. The plants of this variety are medium-sized, semi-spreading, with medium-thick shoots and single thorns.
The "Elegant" variety exhibits high resistance to powdery mildew and anthracnose, as well as good winter hardiness and drought tolerance. For successful cultivation, planting is recommended in spring or during the period from late September to mid-October on sites with bright sunlight. The soils suitable for this variety range from sandy and loamy to clayey and silt-loam, with neutral or slightly acidic reaction. An important part of care is mulching in May after watering and loosening the soil around the bushes.
Irrigation should be performed by drip or subsurface methods, 3 to 5 times per season, while overhead watering is not recommended. To prevent branches from touching the ground, they should be supported with nets or ties. Pruning is done in two stages: sanitary pruning before bud break, and main pruning in November. Fertilization is applied three times during the season: at the beginning of vegetation, immediately after flowering, and 2-3 weeks after the second feeding. Propagation can be achieved by dividing the bush, multi-year shoots, cuttings, layering, and grafting. "Elegant" seedlings are grown in Ukraine, exhibit high survival rates, and meet the declared characteristics.
