Description
Riesling Rheinischer — a technical grape variety of West European origin, first cultivated along the banks of the Rhine River. This variety is characterized by medium or vigorous growth and very late ripening. Leaves are medium-sized, round, three- or five-lobed, with large veins and a bronze hue. Bunches are small to medium, typically cylindrical, dense or loose, weighing about 80–100 grams. Berries are medium-sized, round, with thin, tough greenish-white skin tinged with yellow and occasional dark brown spots. Flesh is juicy and sweet, with a harmonious and pleasant flavor. Riesling Rheinischer is widely used for producing various types of wine — from dry and semi-dry to sweet and sparkling. Wines from this variety exhibit green-yellow hues, which turn golden or even amber with more mature grapes. The aromatic profile is highly diverse and depends on soil and climatic conditions: the bouquet may include notes of peach, green apple, citrus, apricot, and pineapple in more delicate wines. Additionally, spicy, earthy, and smoky nuances may appear, while aged wines develop honeyed, almond, and raisin tones. In warmer regions, berries may exhibit brownish hues, imparting gasoline and gas-like aromas to the wine. The taste of Riesling Rheinischer wines largely depends on acidity levels and berry ripeness. Young wines exhibit bright, sometimes aggressive acidity, whereas more mature wines display pleasant and lively freshness. A distinctive phenomenon of this variety manifests in ripe dry wines, and in higher-category wines with noble rot, the wine develops a full-bodied texture and mature tones. These wines pair excellently with light poultry dishes, cold appetizers, veal, and fish, especially trout. Sweet wines from Riesling Rheinischer complement desserts beautifully.
