Description
Aquino salad (Aquino) is an oil-rich lettuce variety from the Salanova line, developed by the Dutch breeding company Rijk Zwaan. This early variety is suitable for cultivation both in open ground and in protected environments, including hydroponics, enabling year-round production. The plant forms a rosette with small light-green leaves weighing 200 to 500 grams, characterized by succulence, tenderness, and a slightly sweet taste. Each rosette yields significantly more leaves than traditional varieties, making Aquino attractive for fresh market sales.
For successful cultivation of Aquino lettuce, seedlings should be planted in a sunny, wind-protected area with a density of up to 13 plants per square meter. The optimal growth temperature is at least +15°C; growth ceases when temperatures drop below +5°C. The variety tolerates late spring night frosts down to -5°C and high summer temperatures, but consistent soil moisture control is necessary for high yields. Care includes thinning, regular and properly dosed watering to avoid bitterness in leaves, soil loosening, and fertilization with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.
Aquino lettuce is resistant to pests and diseases such as green aphid, internal necrosis, and false powdery mildew. Additionally, it withstands prolonged transportation without quality loss and is rich in vitamins, making it a useful and convenient product. Seeds germinate at +16–+17°C, and the vegetative period lasts 35–40 days. Key agronomic practices include timely watering, weed removal, and fertilization, ensuring a stable and high-quality harvest.
