Ilema

Ilema lettuce is a semi-heading type of Lollo Bionda, developed by Dutch breeders Enza Zaden. It is versatile in cultivation, suitable for open ground from spring to autumn, as well as for protected ground and hydroponics year-round. Medium-maturing, with a vegetative period of 60–70 days, it has strong growth and adapts well to various climatic conditions, including moderate summers and temperature fluctuations. The plant forms a dense, upright rosette approximately 20 cm in diameter, 24 cm tall, and weighing up to 1 kg. Leaves are triangular, deeply frilled, and finely dissected at the top, with a vibrant green color, crisp, and delicious flavor.

Ilema lettuce exhibits high resistance to major diseases such as downy mildew, gray mold, powdery mildew, and immunity to septoria. Additionally, it shows resistance to leaf and root aphids, significantly reducing yield losses. The plant tolerates frost down to -2°C and withstands adverse weather conditions, making it a reliable choice for cultivation in various regions.

Cultivation involves soil loosening, weeding, and maintaining consistent moisture, which promotes high yields—approximately 30 tons per hectare. Ilema lettuce is well-suited for transport in packaged form and can be stored for long periods, making it in-demand both in fresh produce markets and for processing. Due to its excellent taste and attractive appearance, this variety’s greens are widely used in fresh salads, appetizers, and as a garnish for meat, fish, and cheese dishes.
