Description
Stable White Onion Yields: Our Experience with the Eisber Hybrid
When planning to grow white salad onions, the main challenge isn't just achieving a marketable appearance, but keeping it fresh until mid-winter. The Eisber hybrid from Bejo has been a breakthrough for us. Working with this variety, you realize it is a choice for predictability.
Agronomics and Field Performance
A maturity period of up to 90 days fits perfectly into the operational windows for most farms. In the field, Eisber acts like a reliable workhorse: it is not particularly demanding but requires standard moisture management. Its resistance to root rot is especially satisfying — even in years with excessive rainfall, losses are minimal, which significantly simplifies the agronomist's life during the active growth phase.
Product Quality and Storage
The bulbs are uniform and round, which is critical for machine sorting and packing. The weight varies, providing a range from compact 80–90g bulbs to large 160–170g ones. This versatility allows us to cover multiple market segments, from retail bags to HoReCa supplies. The snow-white skin combined with a dry matter content of 10–12% makes it an ideal salad product: it is juicy, mild, and lacks excessive bitterness.
Storage is the trump card of this variety. 5–6 months under proper warehouse temperature control is a realistic figure. We have dealt with many white varieties that start to rot or show signs of decay after just 3 months, but Eisber maintains its structure until the very end of the storage cycle. This allows us to hold off on selling and wait for better market prices.
