SC 3

SC 3 rootstock – a dwarf clonal apple variety bred in Krasnodar Krai and included in the Russian State Register of Breeding Achievements. Trees grafted onto this rootstock are approximately 25–30% shorter in height than the traditional M‑9, making them particularly suitable for dense planting (scheme 5 × 1.5–2.0 m) and saving space in the orchard.

The variety is characterized by early fruiting: fruit buds form as early as the second season at the nursery, and commercial fruiting begins in the second or third year. Yields of grafted plantations reach 40 t/ha, while the fruit maintains high quality and an appealing taste. The root system is tufted, powerful, but can become multi-layered with good mounding; however, practically no suckers form in the orchard.

Ecological resilience is the key factor for using SC 3 in the North Caucasus: the variety is heat- and drought-tolerant, winter-hardy, and resistant to common diseases. Trees require support installation from the first year of life due to the fragile root system and early fruit load, which prevents tilting and breakage.
