Growing Chandler A1: A Grower’s Perspective

When selecting a walnut variety for a commercial orchard, consistency and disease resistance are my top priorities. The 'Chandler A1' variety from the Ukrainian producer 'Svitanok Stari Maiaky' combines strong genetic health with high production standards. Its medium-growth habit makes it very manageable, keeping trees within a 6-8 meter range for easier pruning and harvesting.

Management and Resistance

One of the biggest operational advantages of this variety is its resilience. Dealing with anthracnose and bacterial blight is costly in terms of both labor and chemicals. 'Chandler A1' shows significant resistance to these issues, which reduces the need for frequent spraying and ensures a cleaner, more consistent harvest during humid seasons.

Fruit Quality and Yield

• Nut Weight: Ranges between 14-16 grams, consistently hitting premium market grades.
• Kernel Quality: The kernel has a sweet flavor and a light-brown color, which is highly sought after by wholesalers.
• Yield: Typically 20-30 kg per tree, provided standard irrigation and nutrient management are maintained.

From an operator's point of view, the elliptical shape of the nut is a major plus. It passes through sorters and crackers with minimal damage, resulting in higher recovery rates of whole kernels. This makes 'Chandler A1' a highly practical choice for orchards where mechanical harvesting and processing are the primary focus.
