Description
Greek walnut variety Chernivetsky 1 — a high-yielding and early-fruiting variety developed at the Pridnestrovian Experimental Orchard Station in 1997. The tree is strong-growing with a medium or large spreading crown formed by oval-elongated leaves tapering to the tip. The bark is gray. The variety adapts well to all regions of Ukraine, is not picky about soils, and requires moderate watering. Planting saplings is recommended in open areas with spacing of 8 by 8 meters.
Fruiting begins early — as early as the 2nd or 3rd year after planting, and mass fruiting occurs from the 4th to 6th year. Fruit ripening occurs in the middle or second decade of September. The fruits are large, round with a pointed apex, light-brown in color, with an average weight of 10.6 to 13 grams. The shell is thin and easily crushed, the internal partitions are thin and easily separate from the kernel, facilitating cleaning. Kernel yield ranges from 50.7 to 54.6% of the fruit mass.
The walnut kernel is soft cream-colored, distinguished by high taste qualities and good filling. The kernel contains a significant amount of fats (68.42–70.8%), proteins (15.85–16.86%), sugars (7.02–9.37%), as well as organic acids, tannins, and pectins. Due to these characteristics, variety Chernivetsky 1 is an excellent choice for both personal cultivation and industrial production.
