Alkaligenosis is a plant disease caused by the phytopathogenic bacteria belonging to the genus Alcaligenes. These bacteria are recognized as significant agents of bacterial vascular wilt, affecting a wide range of agricultural crops, particularly in protected ground and greenhouse environments.
In terms of taxonomy, the pathogen falls under the kingdom Bacteria, phylum Pseudomonadota, class Betaproteobacteria. As a group, these microorganisms are highly adaptive, capable of surviving both as saprophytes in the soil and as opportunistic parasites within the host plant tissues.
The disease primarily manifests through symptoms such as progressive wilting, leaf yellowing, and necrotic changes in the vascular bundles. The blockage of xylem vessels by bacterial mass prevents water and nutrient translocation, leading to the rapid decline and eventual death of the affected crops.
The development of the pathogen is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The infection spreads through irrigation water, splashing rain, and contaminated agricultural machinery, which facilitate the entry of bacteria through natural openings or physical wounds on the plant.
To effectively control and prevent the spread of alkaligenosis, growers should implement a robust integrated pest management (IPM) program:
- Strict sanitation protocols in greenhouses to eliminate inoculum sources.
- Crop rotation with non-host species to reduce soil pathogen density.
- Maintenance of optimal water regimes to avoid saturated soil conditions.
- Application of appropriate bactericidal agents or biological control organisms when infections occur.
