The characteristic symptom of an infection by this pathogen is the development of distinct spots on the leaf blades. These spots typically begin as minor chlorotic lesions, which gradually enlarge and turn necrotic, showing shades of brown or gray. Within these dead tissue areas, the fungus produces pycnidia, small fruiting bodies that serve as the primary source for conidia production, facilitating the rapid spread of the disease across the field.

The biology of Aristastoma guttulosum is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Its life cycle involves the asexual reproduction stage, where conidia are dispersed by water droplets during rainfall or overhead irrigation. Once landing on a susceptible host leaf, the spores germinate under humid conditions, penetrate the epidermal layer, and establish a mycelial network within the intercellular spaces of the plant leaf tissue.

Environmental conditions favoring the development and transmission of the pathogen include high relative humidity, moderate temperatures, and poor air circulation within the canopy. The fungus overwinters primarily in the form of dormant mycelium or pycnidia on dead plant debris left on the soil surface. During the following spring, these remnants provide the necessary inoculum to initiate new infections, particularly in warm, damp weather.

The economic damage caused by this pathogen is significant due to the loss of photosynthetic area, which leads to stunted growth and reduced yields. Effective management requires a multifaceted strategy:
