Systematic position and pathogen nature: The dark honey fungus (Armillaria ostoyae) is a member of the kingdom Fungi and the genus Armillaria. It is a highly destructive soil-borne pathogen known for its ability to infect both living trees and woody debris as a saprotroph.
Diseases and susceptible crops: This fungus is the primary cause of Armillaria root disease. It affects a wide spectrum of woody plants, showing particular virulence toward coniferous species such as Douglas fir, spruce, and pine, as well as several hardwood species in managed forests and plantations.
Biology and life cycle: The fungus spreads through the soil primarily via rhizomorphs—black, root-like structures of mycelium. These rhizomorphs grow through the soil and infect healthy tree roots upon contact. In autumn, the fungus produces clusters of mushrooms at the base of infected trees, releasing spores for dispersal.
Development conditions and impact: High soil moisture and temperature conditions favoring tree stress accelerate the pathogen's development. The damage is severe, as the fungus decays the tree's cambium and root system, resulting in growth reduction, windthrow, and mortality of both young and mature trees.
Control and management measures: Effective management strategies involve stump removal to reduce inoculum in the soil and the selection of tree species with higher resistance to infection. In nurseries, soil fumigation and cultural practices aimed at improving tree vigor are critical to minimizing losses from this persistent pathogen.
