Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: Aspergillus is a genus of several hundred mold species in the Fungi kingdom, specifically within the Ascomycota phylum. These fungi are globally ubiquitous, thriving in soil and on decaying organic matter. While primarily saprotrophic, many species act as significant phytopathogens, causing severe damage to both growing crops and agricultural commodities during storage.

Diseases and affected crops: Aspergillus species are responsible for various diseases, most notably grain mold, seed decay in pulses and oilseeds, and ear rot in corn. The primary threat posed by these fungi is the production of mycotoxins, specifically aflatoxins, which are highly carcinogenic and toxic. This renders contaminated harvests unsuitable for commercial use, feed, or human consumption.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is driven by the production of conidia, which are asexual spores formed on specialized stalks. These spores are highly resilient, capable of surviving harsh environmental conditions for extended periods. Once spores settle on a suitable host or substrate and encounter moisture, they germinate rapidly, penetrating the tissue and utilizing plant nutrients for growth.

Development and spread conditions: Growth is favored by high humidity (often exceeding 15% moisture content in grains) and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C. The fungus spreads easily via air currents, irrigation water, and contaminated storage equipment. Poor storage conditions, characterized by inadequate aeration and high ambient temperatures, create the perfect environment for rapid colonization by Aspergillus.

Protection and control measures: Effective management of Aspergillus requires an integrated approach focusing on prevention and hygiene:

  • Drying harvested grains to levels that inhibit fungal growth.
  • Maintaining optimal ventilation and cooling systems in storage facilities.
  • Regular sanitation and sterilization of silos, containers, and harvesting equipment.
  • Application of high-quality seed treatments prior to planting.
  • Implementing integrated pest management to reduce physical injuries to crops that allow fungal entry.
