Taxonomy and nature of the pathogen: Aspergillus alutaceus, formerly classified as Aspergillus ochraceus, belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and the genus Aspergillus. It is a filamentous fungus widely recognized in agricultural microbiology as a significant post-harvest pathogen and a potent producer of dangerous secondary metabolites.

Diseases and host crops: The fungus primarily causes spoilage in stored grains and oilseeds, leading to the development of ochre-colored mold colonies. Susceptible hosts include maize, wheat, barley, peanuts, soybeans, and coffee beans. The presence of the pathogen is often signaled by a distinct yellow-to-ochre dusty layer on the surface of the affected substrate.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves the production of massive quantities of asexual spores (conidia), which are highly resilient and easily dispersed by air currents. Once they settle on a moist organic surface, they germinate and form a mycelium that permeates the substrate, utilizing available nutrients for growth and releasing mycotoxins as metabolic byproducts.

Conditions for development and spread: Development of Aspergillus alutaceus is strictly dependent on environmental factors. It thrives in conditions characterized by high humidity (moisture content above 15%) and warm temperatures between +20°C and +30°C. Mechanical damage to the grain coat, combined with stagnant air in storage facilities, facilitates rapid colonization and spread.

Harmfulness and control measures: The most significant threat posed by this pathogen is its ability to produce ochratoxin A, a nephrotoxic and carcinogenic compound that contaminates food and feed chains. Control strategies focus on strict post-harvest management:

  • Drying crops to a moisture level safe for long-term storage.
  • Implementing effective aeration systems to manage silo temperature.
  • Ensuring warehouse hygiene through systematic cleaning and disinfection.
  • Removing debris and damaged seeds that serve as primary sites for infection.
