It is highly opportunistic and thrives in various agricultural environments, particularly affecting stored commodities.
This fungus is responsible for several pathological conditions in crops, most notably seed mold and rot in cereals, legumes, and oilseeds. By invading the embryo and endosperm of seeds, the fungus significantly reduces seed viability and vigor. It also poses a threat to post-harvest produce such as fruits and vegetables, leading to rapid decay when stored in high-humidity conditions.
The biology of Aspergillus fumigatus is defined by its rapid reproductive cycle and the massive production of conidia. These microscopic spores are highly resilient, allowing the fungus to persist in soil, crop residues, and storage facilities for extended periods. The economic damage caused by this pathogen is significant due to both quantity loss and quality degradation. Moreover, the production of mycotoxins poses serious health risks to livestock and humans. Effective control measures focus on maintaining strict hygiene in storage units, implementing robust drying processes to lower seed moisture below critical thresholds, and utilizing proper chemical protectants where necessary to prevent secondary contamination.
