Description
Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. Aspergillus restrictus belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Aspergillus. It is a microscopic filamentous fungus recognized as a xerophilic pathogen, meaning it has a unique ability to thrive in environments with very low water activity, making it a persistent challenge in storage facilities.
Diseases and susceptible crops. This pathogen is responsible for the spoilage of stored cereals, oilseeds, legumes, and various processed grain products. It does not typically infect living plants in the field but is considered a primary post-harvest storage mold that compromises the nutritional value and viability of harvested seeds.
Biology and life cycle. The fungus reproduces through the production of abundant conidia, which are easily disseminated by air currents. Its life cycle is adapted to low moisture environments, allowing it to colonize grains even when the moisture content is significantly below the threshold required for most other common storage molds.
Conditions for development and harmfulness. Development is favored by high storage temperatures, lack of ventilation, and high grain temperatures. The harmfulness of the fungus lies in its ability to degrade the grain germ, causing a loss of germination, and the secretion of dangerous mycotoxins that present significant risks to human and livestock food safety.
Control and management measures. Effective management relies on strict moisture control during the drying and storage processes to maintain moisture levels below the limit for fungal growth. Best practices include regular aeration of grain silos, proper cleaning of facilities to remove dust and debris, and using chemical fumigants when heavy infestations are detected.
