Description

Southern Blight, caused by the fungus Athelia rolfsii (formerly Sclerotium rolfsii), is a destructive soil-borne pathogen within the Basidiomycota phylum. This fungus is notorious in tropical and subtropical regions for its ability to devastate a wide range of economically significant crops, including legumes, vegetables, and ornamental plants.

The fungus is a polyphagous pathogen, meaning it can attack over 500 species of plants. It predominantly targets the stem base, root crown, and any plant parts in direct contact with the soil. The primary symptom of the infection is the rapid wilting and chlorosis of the foliage, followed by the complete death of the plant due to stem rot.

The biology of Athelia rolfsii is centered on the production of sclerotia—small, mustard-seed-like structures that function as resting bodies. These sclerotia are highly resistant to environmental stressors and can survive in the soil for several years, ensuring the persistence of the inoculum and making crop management challenging.

Optimal conditions for disease development involve high temperatures, typically between 25°C and 35°C, combined with high soil moisture. The fungus spreads through the movement of contaminated soil, irrigation water, and infected plant debris. Once established, the white, fan-like mycelial mats quickly colonize the tissue, producing enzymes that degrade plant cell walls.

  • Implementing long-term crop rotation with non-host species (e.g., cereals).
  • Deep plowing to bury infested surface organic matter.
  • Maintaining proper soil moisture and improving field drainage.
  • Application of specialized chemical fungicides or biological agents like Trichoderma.
  • Sanitizing agricultural tools and equipment to prevent cross-contamination.

The economic impact of Southern Blight is severe, often resulting in massive yield losses in susceptible fields. Because the fungus remains in the soil, infected areas require integrated management practices to minimize the pathogen load and prevent future outbreaks, as there are currently very few truly resistant commercial varieties.
