Banana bract mosaic virus

Systematic position and type of pathogen: The disease is caused by the Banana bract mosaic virus (BBrMV), which is a member of the Potyvirus genus within the Potyviridae family. It is a filamentous, single-stranded RNA virus that has become a major concern for banana producers worldwide, particularly in tropical regions.

Diseases and host crops: The virus specifically targets plants of the Musa genus. The characteristic symptoms manifest as spindle-shaped streaks or mosaic patterns on the bracts of the inflorescence. These symptoms can also extend to the pseudostems, petioles, and the fruit skin, causing significant disfigurement and reduced market value.

Biology and life cycle: The virus is transmitted both vertically through contaminated suckers or rhizomes and horizontally by insect vectors. Aphid species, most notably Pentalonia nigronervosa (the banana aphid), are the primary vectors. Once the virus enters the plant cells, it replicates and systematically invades the phloem, eventually spreading throughout the entire vascular system.

Conditions of development and harmfulness: The development of the disease is highly correlated with the environmental conditions that favor aphid proliferation. High humidity and warmth facilitate insect activity, accelerating the spread of the virus across plantations. The harmfulness of BBrMV lies in the systemic debilitation of the banana plant, leading to poor bunch filling and reduced total yield.

Protection and control measures: Due to the lack of curative treatments for viral diseases, management relies on rigorous cultural and preventive practices:

• Establishing plantations using certified disease-free, tissue-cultured plantlets.
• Strict quarantine regulations regarding the movement of vegetative materials.
• Continuous monitoring and roguing of infected stools to prevent secondary spread.
• Integrated pest management strategies focused on reducing vector populations through biological and chemical means.
