Description

Barley stripe is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Drechslera graminea (teleomorph: Pyrenophora graminea). It is a specialized pathogen that affects barley crops globally, causing systemic infection that can compromise the entire plant architecture.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease include the development of long, narrow chlorotic stripes along the leaf blades. As the infection progresses, these stripes turn brown or necrotic, and the leaves eventually split longitudinally, giving the plant a shredded appearance. Often, infected plants remain stunted and fail to produce viable grain.

The life cycle of the pathogen is primarily seed-borne. The fungus survives as dormant mycelium within the seed tissues. Once the seed germinates, the fungus colonizes the seedling and spreads systemically throughout the developing plant, staying latent until conditions become favorable for symptom expression.

Cool and humid weather conditions during the early vegetative stages are ideal for the pathogen's growth. Soil temperatures between 10°C and 15°C promote systemic infection. High humidity facilitates the production of conidia on the leaf surfaces, which can then spread the infection to neighboring plants via wind or rain splash.

The economic impact of barley stripe is significant due to severe yield losses, as infected plants often exhibit sterility in the spikes. Effective control measures focus on the elimination of the primary inoculum source, including the use of systemic fungicides as seed treatments and the implementation of resistant cultivars.
