Bean calico mosaic virus
Bean calico
Description
Bean calico mosaic virus (BCaMV) is a serious plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by a circular, single-stranded DNA genome and is recognized for causing significant mosaic symptoms in susceptible leguminous plants.
The primary host for this virus is the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Infected plants exhibit distinctive bright yellow mottling on the foliage, which creates a pattern resembling calico fabric. Other symptoms often include stunted growth, leaf curling, and a significant reduction in pod production, which directly impacts yield quality and quantity.
The virus is transmitted by the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent, circulative, non-propagative manner. Once the whitefly acquires the virus from an infected plant, it remains viruliferous for the duration of its lifespan. The transmission process is highly efficient, often requiring only short feeding periods on the host plant to inoculate it with the virus.
Development and spread of BCaMV are heavily influenced by the population density of its insect vector. Whiteflies thrive in hot, dry environments, which accelerate their reproductive cycle and increase the rate of virus transmission across bean fields. Weeds and nearby host plants often serve as essential reservoirs, allowing the virus to survive throughout the year.
Management of the virus relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Growers should focus on the following strategies:
- Cultivation of resistant or tolerant bean cultivars.
- Rigorous control of whitefly populations using targeted insecticides.
- Elimination of weeds that serve as alternative hosts for the virus and the vector.
- Strategic timing of planting to avoid the peak seasons of whitefly activity.
Early detection and sanitation practices remain the most effective methods for minimizing the economic impact of BCaMV outbreaks in both large-scale and small-scale farming operations.
