Description
Bean dwarf mosaic virus (BDMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a viral agent that specifically targets legume crops, causing severe stunting and systemic physiological disorders that significantly reduce agricultural yields worldwide.
The primary hosts of this virus include common beans and various other leguminous species. Typical symptoms of the infection involve dwarfism, leaf curling, yellow mosaic patterns, and overall stunted growth. In severe cases, the infected plants produce very few pods, and the seeds may be shriveled or underdeveloped, leading to substantial economic losses for producers.
The virus biology is strictly linked to its vector, the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Transmission occurs in a persistent circulative manner, meaning the whitefly acquires the virus through feeding on infected sap and remains infectious for the remainder of its life. Once inside the host plant, the virus replicates in the cell nuclei, disrupting normal gene expression and plant development.
The spread of the virus is largely dependent on environmental conditions that favor whitefly proliferation, particularly warm and arid climates. Migration of whiteflies from alternative weed hosts to newly planted bean fields typically marks the start of an epidemic. The geographic distribution is often linked to the ecological prevalence of the whitefly vector.
Control measures are primarily aimed at disrupting the transmission cycle. Essential practices include planting resistant or tolerant bean varieties, managing weed populations around fields that act as reservoirs, and implementing strict insect control programs. Using systemic insecticides to keep whitefly populations below the economic threshold remains the most common approach for managing this viral disease.
