Bean leafroll virus

Bean leafroll

Description

Bean leafroll virus (BLRV) is a serious viral pathogen belonging to the Luteovirus genus within the Solemoviridae family. It is a single-stranded RNA virus known for infecting various species of the Fabaceae family, causing significant physiological distress and systemic disease in economically important crops.

Common hosts affected by this virus include lentils, peas, beans, chickpeas, and forage legumes like alfalfa and clover. Typical symptoms manifest as interveinal yellowing, rolling of leaflets, significant stunting of plant growth, and a severe reduction in pod production, which negatively impacts overall crop yield.

The biological cycle of the virus is strictly dependent on aphid vectors, most notably Acyrthosiphon pisum and Aphis fabae. Transmission is persistent, meaning the aphids acquire the virus while feeding on infected phloem and remain infectious for their entire lifespan, enabling them to spread the virus over significant distances.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of aphid populations accelerate the spread of the disease. Perennial legumes often act as the primary viral reservoir during winter months, serving as the starting point for secondary infections in newly planted spring crops when aphid migration begins.

Economic damage is caused by both decreased grain yield and diminished seed quality. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control BLRV, focusing on the reduction of vector populations through targeted pesticide application, the use of resistant crop varieties, and the strategic removal of weeds and reservoir hosts from the vicinity of fields.
