Description

Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Comovirus genus within the Secoviridae family. It primarily infects legumes, with soybeans (Glycine max) being the most economically impacted crop worldwide. This virus causes systemic infections that negatively affect plant development and total yield output.

Symptoms of BPMV infection typically appear as distinct mottling and mosaic patterns on the leaves, accompanied by rugosity or leaf distortion. In severe cases, chlorosis and necrosis may occur. The impact on pods includes discoloration and a reduction in seed quality, which significantly lowers the market value of the harvested produce.

The biological cycle of the virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, most notably the bean leaf beetle (Cerotoma trifurcata). The virus is acquired by the beetle through feeding on infected sap and subsequently transmitted to healthy plants. This mechanism of transmission makes the disease management closely linked to the entomological status of the field.

Environmental conditions that favor high beetle populations are the primary drivers of virus spread. Warm and humid climates provide optimal conditions for the vectors to move between hosts, leading to rapid disease dissemination throughout the field. Secondary mechanical transmission is possible but rarely the primary cause of large-scale epidemics.

Management strategies for BPMV focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key practices include:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant soybean varieties.
  • Applying systematic insecticide programs to minimize vector populations during the early vegetative stages.
  • Managing weeds and volunteer host plants that serve as reservoirs for the virus and the beetles.
